Overview

This procedure is used to correct a Jones fracture – a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone of the foot. During this procedure, the surgeon inserts a screw into the metatarsal to stabilize the bone and allow it to heal properly.

Preparation

In preparation for the procedure, the patient is positioned and anesthesia is administered. The surgeon creates a tiny incision along the outer side of the foot to access the end of the metatarsal.

Fixation

The surgeon aligns the two fractured pieces of the metatarsal and creates a channel into the center of this bone. A surgical screw is inserted into the end of the channel and through the two pieces of the bone, stabilizing the fracture.

End of Procedure and Aftercare

When the procedure is complete, the incision is closed and the foot is bandaged and placed in a splint. The patient will not be allowed to bear weight on the foot for about two weeks. A walking brace or shoe may be required until the fracture has fully healed.
